Standardized screen reading for Android.

TalkBack is the Google screen reader included on Android devices. It allows you to control your device without looking at the screen. Mastering these six essential skills is the first step toward verifying and navigating mobile web content effectively.

1. Launch and Close

Most Android devices have a hardware shortcut enabled by default to quickly toggle the screen reader.

  • To Toggle: Press and hold both Volume Up and Volume Down keys for three seconds.
  • Confirmation: The device will vibrate and announce "TalkBack on" or "TalkBack off."

2. Muting (Stop Speech)

When TalkBack is reading a large amount of text, you can silence it instantly without disabling the tool.

  • To Silence: Perform a two-finger single tap anywhere on the screen.

3. Screen Curtain

For privacy in public or to ensure you are testing purely by sound, TalkBack can hide the screen content while remaining active.

  • To Toggle: Open the TalkBack menu (swipe up then right, or down then right) and select Hide screen.
  • Repeat the steps and select "Show screen" to restore the visual display.

4. Heading Navigation

Use reading controls to jump between headers and understand the structure of a page.

  • Reading Controls: Swipe up or down with three fingers until you hear "Headings."
  • Jump: Swipe down with one finger to move to the next header.

5. Link Navigation

Skip the body text and move directly to interactive destinations.

  • Reading Controls: Swipe up or down with three fingers until you hear "Links."
  • Jump: Swipe down with one finger to focus on the next link.

6. Navigate Form Fields

Quickly move between inputs to fill out data or submit forms.

  • Reading Controls: Swipe up or down with three fingers until you hear "Form controls."
  • Jump: Swipe down with one finger to focus on the next form element.
  • Interact: Double-tap anywhere on the screen to activate the focused field and bring up the keyboard.

SimpleAccess Insight: Reading Controls

The Reading Controls menu is the Android equivalent of the iOS Rotor. It is a dynamic "dial" that lets you choose if your finger swipes move you character-by-character, word-by-word, or between major landmarks like headers and links. If a navigation type is missing, you can customize the list in TalkBack Settings > Customize menus > Reading controls.

Testing Tip: Set your reading control to "Links" and swipe down to find the Elements Index link at the bottom of this page!
