📱 Mobile Accessibility Standard

Standardized screen reading for iPhone & iPad.

VoiceOver for iOS is a gesture-based screen reader that changes how you interact with your touch screen. Instead of direct interaction, you use specific swipes and taps to navigate. Master these six essential skills to unlock mobile accessibility.

1. Launch and Close

iOS allows you to set an Accessibility Shortcut for quick access without diving into menus.

  • To Toggle: Triple-click the Side Button (or Home Button on older devices).
  • Setup: If this doesn't work, enable it in Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut and select VoiceOver.

2. Muting (Stop Speech)

Instantly stop VoiceOver from speaking while keeping the reader active.

  • To Silence: Perform a two-finger single tap anywhere on the screen.

3. Screen Curtain

Screen Curtain turns off the display for complete privacy. The device remains fully functional, but the screen is black.

  • To Toggle: Perform a three-finger triple tap.
  • Note: If Zoom is also enabled, use a four-finger triple tap instead.

4. Heading Navigation

Headings allow you to scan a mobile page as quickly as a desktop site.

  • The Rotor: Rotate two fingers on the screen like a dial until you hear \"Headings.\"
  • Jump: Flick one finger up or down to move through the page hierarchy.

5. Link Navigation

Skip the text and jump directly to your destination.

  • The Rotor: Rotate two fingers until you hear \"Links.\"
  • Jump: Flick one finger up or down to skip between interactive links.

6. Navigate Form Fields

Quickly move between inputs to fill out data or submit buttons.

  • The Rotor: Rotate two fingers until you hear "Form Controls."
  • Jump: Flick one finger up or down to move between text fields, checkboxes, and buttons.
  • Enter Data: Double-tap to activate a field and bring up the keyboard.

SimpleAccess Insight: The Rotor Dial

The Rotor is the most powerful tool in the iOS accessibility kit. Think of it as a dynamic menu that changes based on what you are doing. If you don't hear "Headings" or "Links" when twisting, go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Rotor to ensure those options are enabled.

Testing Tip: Use the "Links" rotor setting on this page to quickly jump to the Elements Index in the footer!
