🖥️ Built-in Windows Tool
Standardized screen reading for Windows.
Windows Narrator is a deep-reaching accessibility tool built directly into Windows 10 and 11. Whether you are a developer testing a new component or a user navigating the web, mastering these six essential commands is the foundation of a successful non-visual experience.
1. Launch and Close
Narrator is always ready. You don't need to install anything; you just need to wake it up.
- To Launch: Press Win + Ctrl + Enter at any time.
- To Close: Press the same combination (Win + Ctrl + Enter) to toggle it off.
- Pro Tip: You can also find Narrator in the Windows Settings > Accessibility menu if you prefer a visual toggle.
2. Mute (Silence)
When Narrator is reading a long passage and you've found what you need, you don't have to wait for it to finish.
- To Silence: Tap the Ctrl key once. This instantly stops speech for the current item without disabling the screen reader.
3. Screen Curtain
For privacy when using your PC in public, Narrator can turn off the display while it continues to work:
- To Toggle: Press Narrator + Backspace
- Note: The "Narrator" key is usually Caps Lock or Insert. Repeat the command to turn the screen back on.
4. Navigate by Headers
Headers are the "landmarks" of a page. Navigating by header allows you to scan a website as quickly as a sighted user scans titles.

SimpleAccess Insight: The "Narrator" Key
Most advanced Narrator commands use a "Modifier Key." By default, this is both the Caps Lock and the Insert keys. If a shortcut doesn't work, ensure you are holding down your assigned Narrator key.
Testing Tip: Use H to jump between the headers on this very page to practice your scanning skills!
